Sketch 81

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

This 10 photo sketch allows you to focus on a few major photos on the left, then include “all the rest” on the right, while leaving plenty of room for journaling, too. The scallop can be anything… paper, ribbon, rickrack, or fibers.

Templates (includes each side separately, and both sides together.) The scalloped shape & large ring on the template were created by Brittney at “britt-ish designs” and can be found at ScrapMatters.com

I went a little circle crazy with the 10-photo layout. The paper made me do it! :)   I used 3 patterns and 1 solid, all from BoBunny’s Pet Shop collection.

This second layout is digital (using the template above), with 5 patterned papers (and other elements) from designer Summer Drigg’s (free) Vintage Oreos kit.  Note that with both layouts, I added another circle on top of the sketch’s “journaling” spot. Just one way of making the sketch my own (which it already is, but don’t confuse me with the facts!)

Sketch 75

Friday, April 16th, 2010

With this, my 75th sketch, I am introducing 2 new features!

First, the dimensions of each piece of paper are included. Yes, I listened to my fans, and the fans of other sketches that included this!

Second, this sketch is now available as a downloadable template for digital scrapbookers.  Each sketch will have 2 download links, one for each side of the sketch.  The links will be available in between the sketch and the layout example.  They are free for a limited time, so get them while you can!

This 11 photo sketch gives you lots of room for a long or large title, but the main focus is your photos.  Turn your head sideways and look at each side… left for the left side, right for the right.  The sketch would work turned that way, also!

Right side template

The layout 10 photos, to allow for an embellishment on the upper left of the right side..  There are 4 patterns and 2 solids.

Sketch 72

I’m a day late with the new sketch, but I think was worth the wait.  Let me know if you agree (or not!). :) Sketch72
Another circle-iscious layout!  This 10 photo layout is fairly easy, if you don’t get too caught up in the exact placement of the embellishments and flourishes (easier said than done, for me!).  The sketch was inspired by a layout done by my friend Robin S. (aka “The Queen of Doo-dahs”).

Here’s Robin’s layout.  She used more than 5 patterned papers, but since the set was double-sided, she was able to get the most bang-for-her buck based on how she used them.  Popping some of the circles up is an important part of the design.
Sketch72layout
But wait, there’s more!  You will notice that the right side of the Robin’s layout really differs somewhat from the sketch.  That’s because the sketch is created from already-created layouts, and the right side is from my scraplift of Robin’s layout.  The papers are the same, the general idea is the same, but you can see how I made it my own.  Notice I didn’t use as many little circles, and my flourishes are different… and that’s okay!
Sketch72layout2
After creating the layout above, I was working in a different album, and decided to use the sketch again (yes, I use & re-use my own sketches!)  Even fewer little circles, but it all still works.  (Just a note, I discovered the fun of making my own patterned paper on this layout, as I needed another pattern.  So I foam stamped the yellow cardstock and voila!)

Sketch 64

Sketch 64This 10 photo sketch has lots of photos, but even more circles.  Is there such a thing as too many circles?  The collage of the photos helps keep that from being so.

The layout, using 4 patterns (even those that look like a solid here have a slight pattern), is one of my all-time favorites.  You know those layouts that you do, and then you can’t stop looking at them?  This is one of those, for me.

Sketch 47

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Sspsketch47 This 14 photo sketch was inspired by two different layouts, one done by my friend Christine (left side), the other by my friend Robin (right side).

In the layouts, you can see that they both used mostly the same photos and papers, with similar but different results. They both used parts of a brochure and postcards in place of some photos.

Christine’s layout uses 10 photos with 3 patterned papers and 2 solid papers.Web_art_christine

Robin’s layout uses 14 photos, 3 patterned papers and 4 solid papers. Web_art_robin

Sketch 38

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Sspsketch38Here’s another 10 photo sketch.  Ten is the 2nd most popular number of photos for my sketches!  (Eight is tops, so far)

This layout is 8 photos, because I combined the strip on the left and used part of a brochure in that place, and on the right I shortened the top right photo and added a small one under it. The photo on the bottom right is a postcard, which allowed me to include a perspective I otherwise couldn’t. Don’t be afraid to use postcards and brochures on your layout (the title on this one is also from a brochure)! There are 4 patterns and 2 solids used here.

Sketch 37

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Sspsketch37This 12 photo sketch came from one of my fastest layouts ever. I hope it works just as fast for you!

This layout is only 10 photos, since I used one of the circles for journaling. You’ll also notice that the other small circle is not a photo, but a patch I bought at the aquarium.  I didn’t measure it at the time, but thought it was about 3 inches.  Since I use that size so much, I must have an eye for it, because that is exactly what the patch size was!  There are 3 patterns and 3 solids used here.

Sketch 36

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Sspsketch36This 10 photo sketch is all about blocking. The paper is blocked on the background, and the photos are blocked on top of that. The blocked strip at the bottom helps the eye move across the layout, while the half circle behind it helps anchor the strip.

The simplicity of the sketch was perfect for keeping the focus on these photos.  One difference you may notice is that I used 2 quarter circles instead of one half circle.  I goofed and didn’t make my original circle large enough, so I cut it up and turned the pieces around to get this look. You’d never know, if you hadn’t seen the original sketch and if I hadn’t told you, though! There are 4 patterns and 3 solids used here.

Sketch 32

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Sspsketch32This 10 photo sketch has 2 focal photos. The left focus is enhanced by heavy matting, while the right is a larger format photo. The background is mostly just that… background that is there to anchor the photo arrangement. That doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, though!

This layout only used 7 photos.  In the 8th photo space (the 5×7), I used part of a program from the ceremony we attended. It is often daunting to include the program and multiple photos, which is one reason I wanted to show that it can be done and still look good. I replaced the 9th photo with a date/time journaling block. This layout uses 3 patterns and 1 solid.

Sketch 20

Sspsketch20

This 10 photo sketch can easily be adjusted for fewer photos, if you like. I like using the 4×3 size because you can get 2 of them on a 4×6 print.

The layout I created actually used 12 photos, because I made a photo strip at the bottom of the left page. I used 6 patterns and 1 solid. I’m not sure more patterns would have been possible, but I certainly could’ve used less.  As you can tell, though, I love mixing patterns!

Sketch 19

Sspsketch19_2

This 10 photo sketch uses 2 focal photos. Turning them different ways keeps them from competing with each other much, and adds visual interest.

In the example, I did not use 5×7 photos as shown in the sketch, but matted my regular 4x6s in a 5×7 size.  Doing that gives me room to play around with embellishments, which I love. I used 5 patterns and 2 solids.

Sketch 11

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Sspsketch11

This 8 photo sketch has my favorite big circle component, but used in a different way.  The large focal picture on the left side is intended to balance the big circle.

In the example you can see that I used 3 photos bumped against each other in place of the 1 large photo, but with the same visual effect.  For this layout, I used 5 patterns and 2 solids.

Sketch 2

Sspsketch2

Big circles are one of my favorite design elements.  I just love them!  So much that I have to make myself stop using them sometimes!

This 11 photo sketch became 10 photos for the example, in which I used 5 patterned papers and 3 colors of cardstock.

The 2nd example doesn’t have as many photos (only 8), but you still get the look. Because of the strength of the pattern used, it is the only pattern, mixed with 3 solids.
