Sketch 72

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I’m a day late with the new sketch, but I think was worth the wait.  Let me know if you agree (or not!). :) Sketch72
Another circle-iscious layout!  This 10 photo layout is fairly easy, if you don’t get too caught up in the exact placement of the embellishments and flourishes (easier said than done, for me!).  The sketch was inspired by a layout done by my friend Robin S. (aka “The Queen of Doo-dahs”).

Here’s Robin’s layout.  She used more than 5 patterned papers, but since the set was double-sided, she was able to get the most bang-for-her buck based on how she used them.  Popping some of the circles up is an important part of the design.
Sketch72layout
But wait, there’s more!  You will notice that the right side of the Robin’s layout really differs somewhat from the sketch.  That’s because the sketch is created from already-created layouts, and the right side is from my scraplift of Robin’s layout.  The papers are the same, the general idea is the same, but you can see how I made it my own.  Notice I didn’t use as many little circles, and my flourishes are different… and that’s okay!

After creating the layout above, I was working in a different album, and decided to use the sketch again (yes, I use & re-use my own sketches!)  Even fewer little circles, but it all still works.  (Just a note, I discovered the fun of making my own patterned paper on this layout, as I needed another pattern.  So I foam stamped the yellow cardstock and voila!)

Sketch 69

69sketch
This 8 photo sketch uses somewhat larger blocks of background papers, which make it easy to put together.  If you are working from scraps, try to piece it instead, though you may have to move your photos around some.

This layout uses 9 photos, arranged just a little differently, but still recognizable as the sketch.  There are 5 patterns and 0 solids.

Sketch 56
This 9 photo sketch is circle-licious!  Don’t take the exact placement of the circles in the right-page border too literally.  Just punch a bunch and play with it until it looks right.  Don’t overthink it!

I created this 8 photo layout before the sketch, and it is one of my personal all-time favorites. I used papers from K & Company’s Urban Rhapsody collection.  I think there are 9 different patterns here, but that is only because the paper is double sided (I do try to limit myself to no more than 5 patterns, when I buy paper!)

Sketch 55
This 9 photo sketch makes good use of a 3 inch circle punch.  After that, there is very little cropping of the other photos.  The collage on the left page is balanced by the large circle and focal photo on the right page.

The layout only uses 6 photos, to allow more room for journaling.  And instead of a large photo on the right, I used Tim Holtz Grungeboard Numbers (which I love!)  I used 3 patterned papers and 3 solids.

This 8 photo sketch is simple in it’s design, both in the arrangement of the photos and in the layering of the papers. If you are new to using sketches, this is a good one to start with.

This layout is almost exactly like the sketch. It uses 4 patterns and 2 solids.  The papers are from the “Storytime” line by Cosmo Cricket.

Sketch 45

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

Sspsketch45This sketch gives you the opportunity to have fun with papers and embellishments, and yet have room for plenty of photos (11!). The double-matted focal photo is an important element, as it helps balance the busyness of the right side. A 5×7 photo would work just the same.

The layout that this sketch is based on uses only 9 photos, because I used more and larger embellishments, and included journaling.

Sketch 43

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Sspsketch43This 9 photo sketch uses 2 uncropped photos as focal points.  The small circle on the right echoes the larger partial circle on the left, and gives the layout added visual interest.

The layout below uses 7 photos, because one of the photo spots was used for journaling and another spot was used for a portion of the brochure that went along with these photos. The photos on the right side were also rearranged a little, to accommodate the embellishments I wanted to use. The layout uses 5 patterns and 2 solids.

Sketch 33

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Sspsketch33This 9 photo sketch is another with my favorite things… circles!  I really try not to use them all the time, but am always looking for new ways to do sneak them in. :) The 4 photo block on the left balances the large background circle on the right.  Either side could hold it’s own as a single page layout, if you’re into that sort of thing.

In the layout I only used 7 photos, replacing one with a journaling block and another with a favorite of mine… a flower embellishment.  There are 4 patterns and 3 solids in this layout.  (And since so many have asked… the pictures were taken at sunset on Asilomar Beach in northern California, with a Canon DRebel.)

Sketch 31

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Sspsketch31This 9 photo sketch includes 4 uncropped photos, 4 smaller squares, and my favorite 3 inch circle. The circle is mirrored on the right by another hidden partially behind the journaling block (which could be another photo, if needed).

On this layout, I used only 6 photos, 2 of which I matted side-by-side to take up one space in the sketch. I used embellishments in the places of 2 more photos, and omitted the photos above the title altogether, because of the size of my title.  I used 4 patterns and 2 solids.

Sketch 28

Sspsketch28

This 9 photo sketch is a first for me.  It is the first time I’ve
created a sketch without having already created the layout.

Here is the layout I ended up creating from the sketch idea.  As you can see, the only thing that really looks like the sketch is the background papers.  That’s what happens when I create a layout from a sketch instead of vice versa… the sketch ends up being inspiration for a layout that may barely resemble the sketch itself!

Sketch 27

Sspsketch27
This 9 photo  sketch is another that is based on a layout by Robin S.  I was attracted to it, of course, by the big circles!

The first example is Robin’s original layout. She used 5 patterns and 4 solids. You may recognize the photos and papers from Sketch 23, as this was another set of photos we worked on together. Web_hoofers

The second example is my take on the sketch. I still used 9 photos, but the arrangement is completely different. Also, I flip-flopped the layout of the papers, to make them work better with my photos. I used 5 patterns & 2 solids.Web_easter

Sketch 24

Sspsketch24
This 11 photo sketch was created from a layout by my friend Robin S. I love how she got so many photos on here, and yet only 3 of them are severely cropped!

This first example is the layout the sketch was created from.  She is the embellishment queen, in case you can’t tell! :)   There are 4 patterns and 4 solids on this layout.

The second layout is my own version  of Robin’s layout. Yep, even the pictures are the same, because they are of us and our husbands, from when we spent a day on the lake together. I really like being able to show you another take on the sketch, using the same set of pictures. I only used 9 pictures, moved the title, and added some journaling. There are 6 patterns and 2 solids.

Sketch 17

Sspsketch17

This 8 photo sketch does not require severe cropping of at least half of the pictures.  The larger photo, as in any sketch, can be replaced with a regular size photo that is matted well.

In this example, you can see that I switched the sides of the sketch,
mostly to show time progression of the photos.  I also played around
with the sizes of the photos some, because I wanted to add in more
embellishments and quotes.  I used 4 patterns and 2 solids.

Sketch 14

Sspsketch14

This 9 photo sketch  is one of my favorite non-big-circle sketches.  Six of the photos do not require severe cropping.

In the example, I used 4 patterns and 3 solids.  The cool thing is that all the patterned pieces started out as 8.5×11 sheets instead of 12×12.  So if you’re looking to save money on paper, this is an awesome sketch for you!

Sketch 10

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Sspsketch10This 9 photo sketch uses circles to break up a design that might be too linear without them.  The smaller circle embellishments bring balance to the larger circles, but could be replaced with something else.

In the example, I used 8 photos, 3 patterned papers and 1 solid paper.
